CONGRATULATIONS: Historian Dr Catherine Bishop’s fascinating memorial to Sydney’s first female entrepreneurs has won the 2016 Ashurst Business Literature Prize, Australia’s most significant award for business writing.

In her debut book Minding Her Own Business: Colonial Businesswomen in Sydney (NewSouth), Dr Catherine Bishop sheds light on the trailblazing colonial women – previously hidden in historical record ‐ who paved the way for women in corporate life in Australia today.

According to Richard Fisher AM, chair of the judging panel: “Minding Her Own Business is a lively, fact‐filled, refreshing rendering of women and their role in business in the early days of colonial Sydney. It certainly shatters any belief that the place of 19th century women was in the home.”

Dr Catherine Bishop will be a guest speaker at our Readers and Writers Festival to be held on 22 July at the Hotel Canobolas.
